Press release

Munich, December 1, 2016 – The advisory firm goetzpartners and the business magazine WirtschaftsWoche have awarded the “Digital Pioneer” prize for the first time to commemorate an industrial company for exceptional digital innovations. World market leaders were invited to enter their successful projects in the competition through mid-October.

The collective jury selected the suitcase manufacturer RIMOWA as the winner for its digital and fully integrated mobility solution for luggage, the “RIMOWA Electronic Tag.” RIMOWA CEO Dieter Morszeck accepted the special award during the “Neumacher meets Weltmarktführer” conference in Hamburg on November 30. Thanks to this pioneering digital innovation, travelers can check in their luggage using their smartphone and drop it off at the airport in seconds. In addition, airlines and airports can lower their costs, while increasing the amount of control and security for everyone.

Dr. Wolfram Römhild, a Managing Director at goetzpartners, presented the award. “Competition participants were asked to do one thing: Show us an innovation that produces an immediate added value through the digitalization of product development, production or service,” he explained. “RIMOWA took a revolutionary step by digitalizing travel luggage and consequently won the race hands down.”

The first airline partner is Lufthansa, which introduced the option of checking in luggage using the unique tag for its passengers in Frankfurt, Hamburg and Munich in March 2016. In the meantime, the Asian airline EVA Air has joined as well. ”We are really pleased about the award that honors our product innovation,” said CEO Dieter Morszeck. “Ultimately, we want all airlines to allow travelers to digitally check in luggage using the RIMOWA Electronic Tag. We think our tag, which can be easily used with a smartphone, represents the beginning of another tremendous digitalization leap in the travel industry.”

Discussions about digitalization frequently focus on the start-up community’s disruptive solutions. The award-winning solution “RIMOWA Electronic Tag” is proof that industrial companies are also quite capable of revolutionizing their own business sector. Therefore, goetzpartners works with companies throughout the world to implement innovative business models, supports the setting of strategic directions and plans necessary acquisitions or investments.
