Situation
Following the motto "retail is detail", retailers and consumer good producers constantly move between discount and premium positioning, shorter product life cycles, increasing product development costs, higher requirements regarding product quality, product positioning as well as service and consulting. Also, in the search for a niche or the next category killer, retailers and producers act in a "co-opetitive" environment. However, there is no standard solution for increasing turnover or shop productivity.
Trends and challenges
Saturated markets make the realisation of turnover targets increasingly difficult for producers. Therefore, a close cooperation with retail is necessary. In addition, all distribution channels - including stationary retail - have to be coordinated in such a way that all consumer and shopping demands can be satisfied (multi channel management). Over all sales forms (large-scale retail, power stores, power retail, etc.) a CRM trend is developing that directly addresses the end user (consumer oriented CRM), not only the retailer. Where retail can't support the turnover targets of the producers any longer (e. g. premium image and up/cross selling), producers increasingly establish alternative business models: own internet shop/mail order shop and own points of sale (verticalisation). On the retailers side, consolidation is ongoing with an increase of gros shop areas at the same time. The major challenges for them, however, are still a target group oriented product range, shop layout and service (differentiation). Embedded in this strategy, customer retention programs, cost transparency and consequently cost-efficient processes and organisations as well as continuous customer-oriented innovation management are the key to success.
